Pelvic Floor Hypertonicity: From Evaluation to Intervention

Elevated pelvic floor muscle tone or tension is suggested to play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic pelvic pain syndromes. Pelvic floor muscle hypertonicity is complex. The first part of the lecture will therefore focus on the importance of defining and differentiating between normal tonicity, hypertonicity and hypotonicity. The second part of the lecture will discuss muscle tone assessment and its components in relation to the characteristics and limitations of current pelvic floor muscle assessment tools. Finally, conservative management interventions will be proposed based on active or passive component deficits of pelvic floor muscle tone. A case history will be used as an example throughout the lecture.

  • Define and differentiate between pelvic floor muscle tone, hyper/hypotonicity and hyper/hypoactivity using standardized terminology.
  • Discuss the evaluation of active and passive components of pelvic floor muscle tone in relation to current pelvic floor muscle assessment tools.
  • Discuss conservative management of pelvic floor muscle hypertonicity.

Vaginal Estrogens after Breast Cancer

Challenges and Recent Scientific Breakthroughs in Basic Science Research of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders

This lecture will address the epidemiology, risk factors and genetics of PFDs. The current status of basic science research in tissue repair and regeneration of female PFDs will be reviewed, followed by the potential application of stem cell therapy as treatment of PFDs, including current advances in stem cell therapies and challenges related to stem cell therapies. Finally, the potential advantages and limitations of animal models for PFDs will be covered.

  • To describe the current understanding of the etiology and molecular roots of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders (Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence)

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: The Under and Over Bladder Storage

Underactive bladder is a condition which remains in flux due to lack of standardization as to definitions, generally accepted outcome criteria, and patient centered symptomatic appraisal. Although several recent consensus definitions have been advanced, the condition remains poorly defined and standardized. Current areas of disagreement, debate, and potential advancement will be summarized and possible future directions highlighted. The role of specialty societies and interested third-party entities is critical for purposes of gaining consensus and advancing potential research in this field.

Update on Antimicrobial Stewardship

In our current era of increasing antimicrobial resistance, conscientious approaches to evaluation and management of urinary tract infection mandates an evidence-based approach. Recent concepts in antimicrobial stewardship, emerging therapeutic options for recurrent urinary tract infections, as well as limitations of our contemporary practice guidelines will be explored.
